Nick Zembillas Reappointed to NULCA Board of Directors

CLEARWATER, FL – Nicholas M. Zembillas, Senior Vice President, Utilities Division, and Principal of TBE Group, a full-service international consulting, design and engineering firm, has been reappointed to the board of directors of the National Utility Locating Contractors Association (NULCA) for the 2007-2008 term. Zembillas will serve as a member-at-large.

NULCA is an organization of contract locators, facility owners, one-call centers, excavators, subsurface utility engineers and industry suppliers whose mission is to define, establish and maintain high standards and practices in the underground utility contract locating industry to ensure safety and prevent damage.

Zembillas is an internationally recognized expert in subsurface utility engineering (SUE), an engineering process that incorporates civil engineering, surface geophysics, surveying and mapping, non-destructive excavation, and asset management technologies to identify and classify subsurface utility data. Project owners, engineers and constructors use the data to develop strategies that manage risks, avoid costly conflicts and reduce project delays.

Under Zembillas’ leadership, TBE’s Utilities Division is recognized as a SUE leader by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and most Departments of Transportations (DOTs) throughout the United States and Canada. Zembillas is often called on to speak on SUE at conferences and seminars worldwide.

“It has been vital for the ongoing success of NULCA to have a key industry leader like Nick Zembillas as a member of our board of directors,” said NULCA Executive Director Larry E. Bodkin, Jr., MS, CAE. “Nick has served on our board for the past several years, and his input and ideas have helped NULCA reach new levels of service for our members.”

In addition to his NULCA board of directors position, Zembillas presently serves or has served as a SUE technical advisor to the FHWA, United States Department of Transportation (USDOT), Federal Aviation Authority (FAA), Department of the Navy, Buried Asset Management Institute (BAMI) and Buried Asset Management Institute-International (BAMI-I), Associated General Contractors (AGC), Centre for Advancement of Trenchless Technologies (CATT), North American Society for Trenchless Technology (NASTT), National Utility Contractors Association (NUCA), and the United Kingdom’s research study, Mapping the Underworld.

Zembillas has been a Damage Prevention Advisory Board Member and is currently a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), Society of American Military Engineers (SAME), American Society of Highway Engineers (ASHE), American Public Works Association (APWA), American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA), American Association of Airport Executives (AAAE), International Consulting Engineers (ICE), Common Ground Alliance (CGA), Florida Institute of Consulting Engineers (FICE), Florida Engineering Society (FES), and the Florida Transportation Builders Association (FTBA). His articles have appeared in numerous publications, including ENR, Underground Focus, Underground Construction, Trenchless Technology, CE News, and Milestones.
